Tragedy
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.” - Genesis 3:6
Is this not the lie of all sin? Sin always looks delightful in the moment. It appears as if it could be good, even beneficial, bringing joy, peace, fulfillment, or completeness. It seems desirable to the person who has needs that have gone unmet. To the one that lusts after things they do not have. To the individual who longs for more than what God has blessed them with. Sin calls to us with promises that it cannot fulfill.
These are the saddest words in all of Scripture to me. A couple who had been given everything, yet was unhappy with what God had blessed them with. They lived in perfection. No death, no pain, no suffering; yet, it was not enough. They were deceived by a lie that promised to “complete” that which they thought they lacked. When there was no completion needed. Their decision changed everything for countless generations.
This is the story of the common day adulterer, the addict, the gossip, the liar, the thief, the materialist, the idolater, the workaholic, etc. They all seek to find fulfillment in places outside of Christ. There are ample excuses for all, and yet at the end of the day, apart from Christ, we find ourselves naked and afraid. Afraid of wasting our lives. Afraid of not having enough. Afraid of not being enough. Afraid of not being fulfilled at the end of the day. Afraid of not making a difference.
We fail to see that we all are making a difference in some sense of the word. We are either pointing people to Jesus and being fulfilled through Him, or we are leading people to believe the lies that we have been told by our enemy. In our sin, we continue to perpetuate the satanic narrative created by the one, Satan, seeking to destroy what God said was good in Genesis 1. Whispering in our ears that the forbidden is good, that light is found in darkness, and that God is a liar. The enemy, wanting to keep us from what is truly good, lies to us by framing himself as the redeemer and Christ as the enemy of your soul.
It's a tragic story that plays out time and time again. We seek the desires, goals, and success of the world, and are surprised at the end when they end up being only fig leaves that have no ability to keep warm, protect from the elements, or truly cover our sin and shame. The world whispers “Did God really say…?” We take the bait, run sin to its end, and hide from God as Adam and Eve did. The only answer to the plague of sin is repentance for believing the lies and surrender to Christ as our King, Savior, and Sacrifice.
The vast majority of lives end in the tragedy that started in the garden. Seeking that which appears good, delightful, and desirable apart from Christ. Only to be led to our death by the very lies that promised to fulfill. Christ stands in the gap created in the garden for those who trust in Him, leading to life before and after death. Christ calls to you today as He did Adam and Eve, “Where are you?” May we answer His call, admit our failure, repent for believing the lies of our enemy, and trust in His sacrifice that saves us, not the lies of the world and Satan that condemn.
